This could not be some “marketing scheme” marriage of convenience. Good will is too precious to compromise. Reputation is the coin of the realm. A coalition would require building long-term relationships with our partners, sharing ideas, sharing intelligence and working together over the long term to create a substantial increase in sales and market share for members.
This would take consistent effort to make work. Everyone needs to understand that this is meant to be a long-term relationship that builds on our ability to trust each other, share ideas and resources and learn from each other’s insights and experiences.
The big risk here is misunderstanding what is acceptable behavior within the group.
- We would need a memorandum of understanding between partners. Here is a draft.
- We would need a code of conduct for dealing with our community. Here is a draft.
- We would have very clear guidelines as to what can be sent to our community. It is so easy to believe you have a big list so send them a bunch of stuff and make a bunch of sales.
- You can screw up a valuable relationship really quickly by abusing the trust with pushy, salesy stuff.
- We need to be very careful to balance the interests of members and we need serious thought on this up front.
We also have logistical problems with this group. This would take physical eye-to-eye meetings but within a movement for leadership away from trivial activities to more substantial, this is the perfect place to spend more time- because more time here means a serious jump in income potential.
This is by no means a definitive list of the challenges here. A project like this would be tugged at by the usual culprits of unimportant but urgent matters trumping the strategic but non-urgent. But what better place to combat this tendency which steals money from all of us on a regular basis?
This project requires leadership from business owners who have a long term view- who have an ambition to build a big successful company- who see the vision here- and understand the truly amazing business growth this represents- and can take the challenges of helping lead this troop in stride.
