Each of your team players is a unique personality with unique strengths and interests. When we can capture these interests into some aspect of creating and leveraging content – pictures, stories, interviews, video, giving speeches and webinars, you are creating an interconnected business development system that is robust, productive and everybody is having fun.
- When we are able to empower our talent to express their passion for helping
- When we can help them tell stories how they create value
- When we are helping our great team members to show off their strengths and their character
We are building a business development juggernaut. We are helping people figure out that our talent really knows what they are doing. We are helping our community learn to trust us.
The Creation of Compelling Content requires the Stead Support of Visionary Leadership.
Leadership must be personally committed to the strategic goal of creating content. A strategic long-term view is required if content creation is to become ingrained as second nature. Support and recognize those who succeed. Support and encourage those who need help.
Leadership must remain aware of the strategic interconnection of content creation and business growth. Enlightened leadership cannot be distracted by the unimportant urgent and allow it to displace the strategically important that is not urgent.
Remember the story of the big rocks in the jar. All kinds of stuff fits around the big rocks but you have to carefully place the big rocks to make them fit. Putting off the important to deal with the unimportant is a recipe for failure.
Do not crowd your employees with more and more projects and still think you will get them to act strategically. You will get better development results if employees have the slack they need to produce their best value.
Draw the big picture. Help everyone understand that creating content is a substantial part of success. It certainly is. It certainly will onlygrow more important.
It is critical to every person on the team. Make sure they understand its importance. Every person in the business needs a strategic role to play to feel substantial.
You must have systems for measuring results and figuring out how to create accountability. Make sure you reward creating good content.
Be Careful and not Create Conflict between Big Goals.
Make sure that the goals you outline and the reward systems you create do not produce tension between them. You cannot give people a substantial new goal and not give them space to do it. You need to be aware of any possible conflicts in between strategic goals and the tyranny of daily emergencies.
We often have a soft spot in our hearts for hard work. It makes us feel good to see our employees busy keeping up. We work long hours. Hard work is virtuous.
We really do need to understand the trade offs between working hard and working smart, working hard and making hurried decisions, working hard and not stopping to figure out what is important and what is busy work. The lack of slack is costing you money right now.
Are you driven into distraction by interruptions. What do you do that really should not be on your plate? What could you be doing that would be much more profitable? You really do need more slack.
